German measurement structures: case-marking and non-conservativity

چکیده

Abstract This paper addresses the syntactic and semantic analysis of nominal measurement structures like two liters black coffee in German. German allows case-marking on substance noun phrase to vary: it can appear genitive case or same as measure liter . The choice lacks import with absolute measures , but a distinction does arise for proportional percent interpretation case-matching configuration serving prima facie counterexample Keenan Stavi’s Conservativity Hypothesis DP quantification. We argue that ( i ) do not have different configurations depending (e.g., vs. ); ii do, however, configurations; iii contrast between nouns be traced their lexical interpretations; iv apparent violation is only surface-level phenomenon, at LF all quantification conservative.

German children's comprehension of word order and case marking

In this paper we explored factors that affect how children learning German understand which participant is the agent and which the patient in simple causative sentences (i.e. who does what to whom). Most languages, including German, have multiple cues to mark these roles. In two comprehension experiments we examined whether German children are able to use the grammatical cues of word order and ...

Articulatory gestures and focus marking in German

This study reports on a production experiment investigating tonal and articulatory means of encoding different focus structures in German. Using an electromagnetic articulograph, we examined the movements of the upper and lower lips (related to sonority expansion) during the production of target words occurring in four different focus conditions. We found systematic differences not only between...

Non-structural Case Marking in Tibeto-Burman and Artificial Languages*

This paper discusses the diachronic development of non-structural case marking in TibetoBurman and in computer simulations of language evolution. It is shown how case marking is initially motivated by the pragmatic need to disambiguate between two core arguments, but eventually may develop flagging functions that even extend into the intransitive domain. Also, it is shown how different types of...

Case marking and alignment

In (1) the syntactic functions of S (gizona ‘man’ in 1a) and O (mutila ‘boy’ in 1b) are identically coded, while in (2) it is S (muzhchina ‘man’ in 2a) and A (muzhchina in 2b) that are identically coded. That is, the two languages differ in whether S is aligned with A or O. Henceforth we refer to syntactic functions such as A, O, and S as argument roles. Argument structure has to do with the nu...

The Acquisition of Case-Marking by Adult Learners of Russian and German

This study investigated the acquisition of overt morphological case by adult native speakers of English who were learning Russian or German as a second language (L2). The Russian casemarking system is more complex than the German system; but it almost always provides the listener with case inflections that are reliable cues to sentence interpretation. Two approaches to learning of inflectional ...
